Pretty in Pink

For a long time one of the twins favorite color was pink.  Everything had to be pink.  The other twin liked pink, but not nearly as much.  So I was pleased to discover this:

  1. When my nephew was 5 he would wear nothing but hello kitty underwear. It's so hard for people to accept a boy in "girl's" clothing, but we dealt with it, even when he was being teased in the bathroom or by his friends.

Now I have a baby girl, and I don't make a big deal of dressing her like a girl - I use a lot of hand-me-down clothes from a friend who had a boy, so she wears kind of boyish clothes. I'm always surprised when I'm in stores or public places and people get upset when they can't tell what gender an infant is. Does it matter?

  4. I had a conversation with my third grader about all colors being "non-gender". Boys don't have to wear blue and girls don't have to wear pink. He was watching a newscast in which a man was wearing a pink tie,and he said "See...boys DO wear pink sometimes"! If that's the worst thing we have to worry about as parents, we're doing pretty good.
